This is a SmartBill position. You will join their team and work exclusively on SmartBill’s products.

ABOUT THE ROLE

You'll be the first dedicated DevOps engineer at SmartBill. Our infrastructure exists and serves 100,000+ customers, run to date under a server-admin model. We're hiring you to lead the transition to modern DevOps practice: define how we do this from here, and bring the discipline a serious cloud platform deserves.

Today our infrastructure is mostly hand-managed: EC2 instances, ALBs, S3, multi-region traffic, RDS Postgres, ElastiCache Redis. It works, but it's not where we want it to be, and we want you to be opinionated about getting it there.

We're part of the Visma group, and you'll operate in close consultation with the Visma Cloud team, a deep bench of cloud expertise you can lean on rather than figuring everything out alone. We're targeting VCDM (Visma Cloud Delivery Model) accreditation, which gives this role a clear external benchmark for security, reliability, and operational maturity.

You will be the single DevOps engineer at first. We expect to grow the function over time, and your documentation and automation habits are what make that possible.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

• Drive the company toward VCDM accreditation in partnership with the Visma Cloud team

• Design and roll out Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred, CDK acceptable) over the existing AWS estate

• Migrate workloads to ECS and tighten our containerization story

• Operate and tune managed data services (**RDS Postgres**, ElastiCache Redis); review topology and performance

• Build and own a disaster recovery plan with tested RPO/RTO targets, and review existing backup/restore procedures

• Stand up 24/7 alerting and observability on Datadog, Grafana and Prometheus. Signal, not noise.

• Drive cost optimization as a first-class concern, with visibility and authority to act

• Implement security baselines: least privilege (users and inter-resource), secure DB access, secrets management and rotation, OS patch management

• Partner with dev teams on CI/CD (TeamCity and GitHub Actions), help them ship faster and self-serve common infra needs

• Manage DNS, CDN, networking across regions

• Share the on-call rotation with the dev team and SRE

• Document everything: runbooks, architecture, decisions. Bus factor matters.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

• 5+ years in DevOps / SRE / Cloud Engineering, with deep AWS production experience

• Strong hands-on with ECS and containerization

• Production experience with IaC (Terraform, CDK, or CloudFormation)

• Solid AWS networking: VPC, security groups, multi-region, Route53

• Operational experience with RDS Postgres and ElastiCache (or equivalent managed data services)

• Linux administration and shell/Python scripting

• Strong DNS and CDN experience (Route53, CloudFront)

• Track record of designing and executing disaster recovery plans, not just writing them

• Cost-awareness: you can read a Cost Explorer report and act on it

• Strong written and verbal communication (English; Romanian preferred)

• Self-driven and opinionated

Nice to Have

• Container registry and image hygiene (ECR, vulnerability scanning)

• AWS certifications (Solutions Architect Pro, DevOps Engineer Pro)

• Experience as the first or founding platform hire at a similar-stage company

• Familiarity with TeamCity
